Oil is like a drinking problem for America. America has been atached to oil ever since it was found, originally people believed that Oil was an everlasting source which fueled all their dreams. Politicians were always supportive and telling them that their would always be cheap oil for them, even if they had to steal it from other countries.
This is also how the conflict over oil began. So I really think we should keep trying to find new sources.
